The Beach Course

Measuring 6,507 yards from the championship tees and 5,920 from the resort tees, the Beach Course runs through part of Hawaii's rich history. Ancient burial caves border the driving range, and a large petroglyph field wedges the 6th and 7th holes.

Remains of a historic fishing village have been preserved on the 12th fairway, and lava formations are incorporated into the layout at every hole. Adding to the challenge, Robert Trent Jones Jr. placed 76 sand bunkers and three lakes in the layout, gently rolling fairways, some elevated tees and plenty of lava. There are five par threes, 10 par fours, and three par fives for a par-70 total.

The most difficult hole on the course is the par-five 9th. This dogleg right measures 540 yards from the championship tee and has five fairway bunkers and trees along the right side. There are three traps guarding the green. Near the 12th hole the fairway narrows on the approach to the green, which has three bunkers. Distracting ocean views and a two-tiered green add to the challenge of this beautiful hole, one of only a few par-five ocean holes in the state.

The Kings Course

The newest addition at the Waikaloa Resort complex on the Big Island's sunny Kohala Coast, the Kings Course opened its 18-hole championship course in 1989. The Course was carved out of the rough lava fields created by 5,000 year-old flows from Mauna Kea.

The Kings course is a par-72 championship layout designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. Weiskopf, the former British Open champion from Ohio, characterizes the Kings Course as "a second shot course, much like Augusta. Your tee shot dictates the difficulty of your second shot."

The Kings Course boasts four tee positions: Kings, championship, resort, and forward tees. It measures 7,064 yards from the Kings tees, 6,594 yards from the championship tees, 6,010 yards from the resort tees and 5,459 from the forward tees. It has four par threes, 10 par fours, and four par fives, adding up to a par-72.

The front nine begins with a relatively easy par four measuring 379 yards from the Kings tee that has a wide fairway but a narrow green. Most golfers can make a three on this first hole. The 2nd hole, a 562-yard par five, plays around the right side of a huge lake. The second and third shots need to negotiate a couple of cross bunkers, then four fairway bunkers that squeeze the play area.
